Great Places To Visit - Buchan - Victoria

Well what do you do when you have 2 weeks off to roam around Victoria? You make the most of it!! We hadn't been for a drive around Victoria for a very long time. One stand out in our touring was the little town of Buchan, known for it's caves. We cruised down from Thredbo to Jindabyne and then down The Barry Way through Kisciuszko and The Alpine National Parks.B-E-A-utiful drive, but lots of tight curves and turns, and large sections of dirt road (not a problem in the dry - check with authorities when it's wet). We enjoyed it as there are lots of roadside stops, camping and picnic areas along the way (with drop toilets). It's a long drive down as the going is slow, but we wanted to see the National Parks, and see them we did! Liked it so much I would do it again, so long as we can borrow my brother in laws 4 wheel drive again. Some people were travelling in normal sedans along this road, but it wouldn't have been very comfortable.

We arrived in Buchan some 5 hours after we left Jindabyne as hubby had to constantly stop for me to take photos. Even so if you allowed approximately 4 to 5 hours for this trip you would do it with lots of time to site see and leg stretch. We came around the last bend and down into the pretty little town of Buchan. An oasis in the hills. Quiet, beautiful, good cafe, pub meals, service station for fuel, a small assortment of accommodation and of course The Buchan Caves.

We stayed at some log cabins with a lovely outlook down the valley. We then looked around for  something to eat and a good coffee. BINGO! We found THE BEST home made food and coffee possibly in Victoria. I kid you not!

The Callemondah Cafe is situated in the heart of the Buchan township and is run by Steve and his partner.  They cook everything that you eat, and make the best coffee ever! You'll find Callemondah Cafe at 51 Main Rd, Buchan. Make sure you call in and taste some of the breakfasts, lunches or snacks. If you want a Devonshire tea that's available also or browse the glass refrigerated cabinet of cakes, slices, quiches, vegetable slice or whatever has come out of their kitchen on the won't be disappointed. Friendly staff and the choice to dine inside or alfresco is yours to decide.

Anyway we liked Buchan so much, we stayed 2 nights! Aaaahhhh the serenity, The Callemondah Cafe, the beautiful views. We didn't even bother going to the caves as we have been there before and I'm not keen on being underground......bit of a sook. Enjoyed the rest and good food and the friendly people in this little town very much. Thanks Buchan, we will return again sometime, not for your caves as tourist may well do (they are worth seeing), but for your friendly people and fantastic food and comfortable accommodation, and peace and quiet.
