Great Places To Visit - Dandenong Ranges, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Saturday morning the weather was B_E_A_Utiful! So......what to do on a lovely sunny Melbourne weekend. Grand final weekend actually, but we are not footy fans. Gasp, horror, i know, but it's true, we don't like football. So, we decided to take Miss Lily with us and go for a drive in the Dandenong ranges, find a nice little spot for a Devonshire Tea and soak up the beautiful views (if there were any).
Well we found just the spot. A Devonshire Tea and light lunch spot called "Viewpoint." And a lovely view it was. I enjoyed a toasted ham and cheese on multigrain, whilst Bernie enjoyed a Devonshire Tea.  Miss Lily of course enjoyed a snippet of my toastie.  We sat on the verandah, looking across the road at the lookout and beyond to the views of the valley and water below.  Very relaxing.  Warm, balmy spring day, gentle breeze, and no where else we had to be......great.

If you want to find this little spot, Viewpoint, we headed up Burwood Hwy through Upper Ferntree Gully, turned left at the Mt. Dandenong sign and kept going up. It's basically at the top. Afterwards we kept going in the same direction which I think was still called Mt. Dandenong Rd down to Monbulk.  Did a left turn into what became Canterbury Rd and headed for home.  I guess it depends where "home" is for you and how much time you want to spend sight seeing.  We certainly enjoyed our little break and will visit "Viewpoint" again.

Great Places To Visit: Tocumwal NSW on the Murray River.

Perhaps I'm a little prejudiced, as Tocumwal is my home town, but I've always loved the Murray River Red Gums and watching the river & the bird, animal life here. All year around it delights me. Even the noisy Corella's can't put me off, I love living here. So why would a visitor want to spend time in Toc? Let me list just a small few off its attractions for you: Water sports: Fishing, skiing, swimming, canoeing, and any other water play you might like. Food: We have a number of Pubs, Clubs, Restaurants & Cafes if not in town then in easy driving distant. BIG variety for good old schnitzels, salads & chips to take-a-way favorites, great Coffee & Cakes and Bakery delights to tempt the taste buds!!  If you're an Artist or Photographer then Toc is a plethora of diverse landscapes to draw (pun intended) your attention. I for one have never tired of its beauty.  For the traveler's in their campers or caravans Toc has a selection of options for you to

Great Storm to Watch - Over Tocumwal N.S.W. Australia - Mini Tornado

A mini Tornado struck Strathmerton on the weekend of October 31/10/15 destroying a couple of houses. Luckily no one was hurt. Just a bit further along the Murray River at Tocumwal the Tornado ended. We happened to be home and live near the edge of town, close to the river.  We saw the sky turn pink, grey and green. Ominous. Can't remember a stormy grey sky turning pink or especially green before. Made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Then we heard this roar.  Bernie looked at me as we stood on our back verandah watching the clouds flying about and said "What's that noise?" I replied, "Wind. Lots of it. I think we should go inside now." As I said this we saw the sky along the river turn green and pink and the trees begin to whip wildly. We retreated inside for a bit and as the roar died away we ventured back out to the front verandah as torrential rain began to fall. And boy did it rain!!! The early afternoon turned dark as the clouds above turned

It's Baby Magpie Season

Yes it's Spring again. I know because the local magpies have 2 babies. I know this because I occasionally throw out scraps on my back lawn to supplement their food rations and they are regular visitors. This week they brought me a present.....2 babies. Must be a good season this year to be raising 2 babies instead of 1. Anyway the magpies here in Melbourne are white backed magpies as apposed to the magpies at Tocumwal in N.S.W. which are black backed magpies. Also the birds here in Melb. are larger than their northern cousins, probably all the McDonalds they eat down here! I enjoy listening to their warbling song and can't help but shake my head at the patience and persistence of the adult birds constantly being "harassed" by the chicks for food. They are noisy little critters when they are hungry and very bossy, often pecking at the adult birds for more food. I've named them....squarker 1 and squarker 2, they never seem to stop. Poor parent birds, these chicks a
